It’s All About The Name

How did you choose what to name your child? Did you find out the sex of the baby and then pick or did you wait until he or she was born and decide based on their appearance? There are lots of different ways to pick baby names and millions of different names to choose from. The name you settle for is the name your child will be known as for the rest of their life so make sure you give it a lot of thought.

The Name Police

It is almost a guarantee that friends and family members will have plenty of name suggestions for you and may even try to put you off some of your own preferred choices. Some family members may drop hints about you using their name for the baby, whether it be a first or middle name. This can be a nice gesture but you should never feel it is something that you have to do. While this interference can get incredibly frustrating at times it’s good to remember that at the end of the day it’s you and your partners choice and everyone else just has to like it or lump it.

It never hurts to talk

I think I drove my husband mad during my own pregnancies as I kept going over the same names in different combinations. It might seem silly but a name has to fit together and flow nicely without being too similar sounding. I once new a man named Greg Gregory, his parents said they wanted him to have a sense of humor but he never saw the funny side and changed his name to Paul as soon as he was old enough. It’s important to remember that although it may seem comical at the time, a name is something that can define a person for the rest of their lives. There are lots of different things you need to consider so take your time and don’t rush the name decision.

There are lots of considerations when you’re deciding on a name, such as appeasing relatives, avoiding embarrassing initials or nicknames, and steering clear of monikers associated with bad memories.

Popular or Unique

Every year there is a list compiled of the most popular baby names chosen in the last 12 months. You can bet that nearly all of these top names are based on some new TV Star or fictional character. It might be an idea to check this list before deciding on your name if you don’t want your child to be one of 10 kids in the class with the same name. On the other hand unique names can be just as problematic. On the one had, yes it can be nice to be the only person with your name but it could also prove very frustrating if you spend your life correcting people on it’s pronunciation or spelling. Try to find a nice middle of the road name that isn’t hugely popular but also isn’t so rare that people have never heard of it.

Give your child a really unusual name and they will spend their lifetime repeating it to non-believers and explaining how to spell it, what it means, why they were called it and how to pronounce it.

When you come across the right name you will know and as your baby grows you will see that there was never any other name for them. This name suits them perfectly. As long as you have followed the tips above and paid special attention to what the initials spell, your child should never be embarrassed to introduce themselves properly.
