Financial literacy for for elementary kids – Nickelsburg is now online!
There are some pretty amazing things that come out of the internet.
The award winning Kids Count financial literacy program for elementary students has now expanded to an online classroom, Nickelsburg! I have had the privilege of working with the great people at Kids Count to create the exciting town of Nickelsburg where kids can learn about money management while playing around the town. And, best of all, it is FREE!
I believe this is one of the most important things for our kids to learn regardless of age. In fact, the sooner the better. Most of us don’t involve our children with our finances. I guess to some it goes with the culture. But teaching them the value of money and how to manage it will better equip them in their financial decisions later on in life. A lot of seemingly mature adults think and act more like children when it comes to money.
We have the tendency to be impulsive buyers, buying without thinking. Teaching and training our children earlier with handling money is a very good thing for a parent to do.
Needs versus wants is discussed as well as planning short-term and long-term goals. In this module, students will start looking at personal budgets and evaluating the spending habits of kids in the town of Nickelsburg. This fun module takes students through the
ways family budgets are effected by every day life. Students are introduced to checks, withdrawals, bank statements and other banking transactions throughout this module.
When we are teaching them about finances, we are actually showing them the realities of life. They will become grounded, and responsible adults later. They will know from an early age that our choices can have a big difference in our lives. This will be tough for us though, because that means we ourselves should be the best examples and models that they can actually see.
